Born in Santa Fe, New Mexico in 1947,
Robert Montoya spent the first thirteen
years of his life on the campus of the Santa
Fe Indian School where his parents were
teachers.

His artwork is a changing blend of
contemporary and traditional Indian art
styles and draws from the sources of
pueblo life, religious symbols, pictographs,
and the artist's imagination. The work
grows from roots in the two distinct pueblo
cultures of his father and of his mother.

An honor graduate of the University of New
Mexico with a fine-arts degree in
architecture, Montoya was awarded the
American Indian Ford Foundation
Fellowship to the University of Oklahoma
where he earned his graduate degree in
city and urban planning.

His paintings and lithographs can be found
in various public and private collections
including the Heard Museum, Phoenix,
Arizona.
