The pastel "Plum Free" was
a trade for framing at the
Plum Tree Frame Shop on
Canyon Road in Santa Fe in
1978. Gene Newmann was
having an exhibition of his
pastels at the Clarke-Benton
Gallery in downtown Santa
Fe.
When Bill Benton discovered
I had chosen this pastel in
trade he threw a fit. He
thought I had selected the
best pastel (true) of the show.
When Bill's secretary was
typing the labels for the
pieces she asked what to
title the pastel. An
exasperated Bill said, "Mark
it sold and call it "Plum
Tree"." She either didn't hear
him correctly or did a typo or
was being mischievous - she
typed "Plum Free". RT
